Level 2 Facility Planning and Design

Program Overview

The Facility Planning and Design certificate is a short, face-to-face course that provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to plan and design facilities effectively. Students will learn about the different stages of the facility planning and design process, from needs assessment to construction and renovation. They will also learn about the different types of facilities and their unique planning and design considerations.
    Module 1: Introduction to Facility Planning and Design
  • Define facility planning and design and explain its importance.
  • Identify the different types of facilities and the unique challenges and requirements of each.
  • Understand the different stages of the facility planning and design process.
  • Apply facility planning and design principles to real-world scenarios.
    Module 2: Facility Needs Assessment
  • Conduct a facility needs assessment to identify the current state of a facility and its future needs.
  • Gather and analyze data on space requirements, functional requirements, and environmental requirements.
  • Develop a facility needs assessment report that outlines the findings and recommendations.
  • Present the facility needs assessment report to stakeholders and get their buy-in.
    Module 3: Space Planning and Allocation
  • Develop space plans and layouts that meet the functional and operational needs of a facility.
  • Allocate space to different functions and activities based on their importance, frequency of use, and adjacency requirements.
  • Create space plans and layouts that are efficient, flexible, and adaptable to change.
  • Use space planning software to create and visualize space plans and layouts.
    Module 4: Facility Layout and Design
  • Apply facility layout and design principles to create functional, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing facilities.
  • Consider factors such as traffic flow, sight lines, and accessibility when designing facility layouts.
  • Use design software to create and visualize facility layouts.
  • Develop facility layout and design drawings that can be used for construction or renovation purposes.
    Module 5: Facility Construction and Renovation
  • Understand the different stages of the facility construction and renovation process.
  • Develop project schedules and budgets for facility construction and renovation projects.
  • Manage facility construction and renovation projects to ensure that they are completed on time and within budget.
  • Oversee the work of contractors and other stakeholders involved in facility construction and renovation projects.
